Uses of Function Keys in a Computer

Function keys present on a computer keyboard, from F1 to F12, have different uses or no use at all. The operating system of the computer and the software that is being run controls how these keys operate. A software can not only use each of them but also combine the function keys with the Alt or Ctrl key to perform different tasks. For example, on Windows, you can press Alt + F4 function key to close the current software.

Stop Facebook spam messages.

Recently, I have been getting a lot of messages of people sharing a video link with my own profile picture as a thumbnail. I am sure many of you may have gotten the link too and some of you may have clicked it out of curiosity.

To be honest, it cannot be termed as a virus. I just named the title to be generic and on the same technical grounds as all of you are. So what is it?

It's an OAuth based issue which is being misused drastically. Let's get to the basics first so that you can all understand what you are dealing with.

What is OAuth?

Open Authorization (OAuth) is an open standard authentication mechanism, commonly used as a way for Internet users to log in to third-party websites using their accounts at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, etc. but without exposing their password.

You must have seen "Login with Facebook" button on most websites using which you can log into other applications using Facebook's authentication, it makes our life easier.

How OAuth works?

I don't want to move off topic here. Basically, OAuth has multiple parameters, one of which is the "state" parameter. A state parameter is used to generate a token that in simple words confirm that the request generated from you and not someone else. So if there is a Facebook app without the "state" parameter, what are the consequences?

You guessed it right, it can be misused into forging requests. So what you do when you click the video link in your chatbox from someone else is this very flaw in the Facebook app and you are unknowingly allowing someone else to post on your behalf. Thus forging requests is what we call it.

How to get rid of OAuth-based spam messages?

  • Go to your Facebook account’s settings.
  • Then go to App settings tab.
  • You’ll see Apps, Websites, and Plugins authorized to use your Facebook's account.
  • Remove the apps you don't recognize or don't use anymore.
  • Delete all of the previous spam messages.
  • Then go to Security tab in your Facebook account's settings and end the activity of all other active sessions.
  • Finally, change your password.

I hope this may help you. Stay safe, Do not click tempting malicious links and you will be just fine.

Dil Dil Pakistan being played on Indian aircraft

After the cross-border firing between the Pakistan and India, which caused many casualties to both sides, now hackers are all ready to fight a cyber war. Both nuclear powers have got world class hackers who have fought many cyber wars back in the time.

Times Of India reported on Tuesday that when aircraft are on final approach for landing, hackers from across the border often tap into the frequency on which pilots are in touch with the Jammu air traffic control (ATC).

Hackers from Pakistan, use to transmit Pakistani patriotic songs on the frequency which play out in cockpits. Pilots communication with the ATC remains blocked during that time.

This ATC is run by Indian Air Force, which coordinates with the aircraft when they are over 10,000 feet high.

To make pilots be able to communicate with the Jammu ATC, the Northern Control Udhampur gets an alternate frequency from the Jammu ATC via landline.

The new alternate frequency can't be hacked quickly, so pilots get enough time to land into Jammu while being in touch with the ATC.

"Hackers frequently jam our frequency with ATC and start playing their music. This is a big irritant as we are in the final stage of landing." said a pilot.

The Jammu ATC frequency changes frequently to survive against the hacking.

A pilot told Times Of India that this hacking has been happening for some time, the songs are being played forcefully include Dil Dil Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the guys behind this hack are not revealed yet.

Chrome to kill HTTP

Emily Schechter from the security desk of Google has posted on Google's official blog that how will they scare the visitors of unencrypted websites in the coming versions of Google Chrome.

An unencrypted website uses HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) to transmit data between users and server. This type of protocol is insecure, any third party usually termed as "third man" connected to the same network can steal and modify the data before it gets to the visitor.

Exploiting your unencrypted connection to the server, an attacker will also be able to steal your sensitive data like your credit card's information or any password you type on any website which uses HTTP to transfer the data.

Currently, Chrome 53 shows a neutral sign in the address bar when you visit a website over HTTP connection. This sign doesn't scare any visitor and no one leaves the website because of that. To make visitors take HTTP connection seriously, Google decided to replace that icon with a red colored triangle. This will scare the traffic of HTTP websites for sure and people will avoid filling password fields on such websites.

Chrome will roll this out gradually. Starting from January 2017,  Chrome 56 will mark HTTP websites containing password or credit card form fields as insecure. The following releases will start marking all HTTP pages as insecure in Incognito mode.

Chrome 53 & Chrome 56 address bar

And then it will be the time when all HTTP pages will be labeled as "not secure" along with the red triangle icon.

Treatment of HTTP pages by Chrome

Schechter also wrote that more than half of the Chrome desktop pages are being served over secure HTTPS connection. Furthermore, she wrote that almost all top websites are over encrypted connection.

Google have given webmasters a few months before they will start scaring their traffic. Having encrypted connection will be the only choice to make visitors trust your website in future. So consider switching to HTTPS now.

disable windows 10 keylogger

Microsoft can get to know every single word you type or say to (its digital assistant) Cortana while using Windows 10. This thing is called keylogging. Keylogging is usually done by a software called Keylogger.

A keylogger may be a software or a hardware device used for surveillance so it can record every keystroke you make. It can capture everything you type including your sensitive information like your credit card numbers and all other passwords. The log file can then be sent to a specific receiver.

Why do Windows 10 collect such information?

Microsoft collects users typing and speaking habits to improve its digital assistant Cortana so users can experience more accurate suggestions and have a personalised environment.

Should I disable Windows 10's keylogger?

In this era when everything sensitive or not, have gone digital so users privacy matters a lot. Windows 10's keylogger helps Cortana to assist you better. Turning this keylogger off means disabling Cortana to provide you with a personalised experience. But if you care about your privacy and don't want Microsoft to access your sensitive information, disable it now.

How to disable Windows 10's built-in keylogger?

1. Go to Start Menu and open Settings.
2. Open the Privacy tab.

Disable Windows 10 keylogger in privacy settings

3. In "General" privacy settings, turn off the third option which wants your permission to send your information.

Turn off windows 10 built-in keylogger

4. Now open the "Speech, inking & typing" options. Click on "Stop getting to know me" and turn it off.

Stop microsoft windows 10 getting know your personal information

You are all done. Have questions? ask in the comments box below.

In case if you have not created a Windows recovery drive yet, this is the best time to do so.

When to use Windows recovery drive?

You don't need windows recovery drive in normal conditions when your PC is not running well or it fails to boot several times. Because when you start your PC, Windows 10 provide some advanced options unlike previous versions (excluding Windows 8), these options provide great tools to fix your headache. But the time may come when Windows will not be able to bring up these tools and that will be the time when your recovery drive will help you. You can also use Windows installation disc to reinstall Windows but in case you don't have one, recovery drive (you created before) is the best option.

Recover Windows 10 from USB flash drive:

1. In the first step, simply connect the recovery drive and turn on your computer.

USB Recovery Drive for Windows 10

As you know that nowadays Windows backup disk is not being provided by PC manufacturers. There may be a dedicated recovery partition on your hard drive for recovering Windows operating system if something bad happens. But that thing may not help you if your whole drive gets corrupted.

First Thing To Do After Buying New PC:

When you buy a new PC which comes with preinstalled genuine Windows, the first thing you should do is to create a recovery drive of that Windows operating system because no one knows that when will you be facing the problems. You can create that backup on a disk or on a USB drive. I will recommend you to create a USB recovery drive.

Precautions:

* USB flash should be of 8 GB because it will need around 3 to 6 GB of free space.
* This will erase everything else which is stored on your USB automatically so it is recommended to use an empty flash drive or backup your important data first.

How To Create A USB Recovery Drive?

1. Connect your flash drive.
2. Search "recovery drive" in the search bar located on the task bar.
3. Click on 'Create a recovery drive' from the search result.

Search Recovery Drive Tool

4. Check the box asking "Back up system files to recovery drive" and click next.

5. Select a drive to continue back up.
6. It will take several hours to complete the operation so be patient.

7. The system will notify you once it is all done. Now you will be able to recover Windows 10 using this drive.
